Millions of people in the United States grow their own food, some of it anyway. According to reports, 1 in 3 households grows food and people are actually farming organic.

The food revolution truly has taken not just America but the entire world by storm, people acknowledging the benefits of homegrown foods, although some are simply enjoying to experiment.

Farming is challenging either way you do it, whether out there on the land or in the balcony of the apartment. It’s also challenging when you don’t know where to start, which is why here you will find all the product types to make an edible garden.

Fruit and vegetable seeds

You can fill a garden with fruits and vegetables but also plant fruit and vegetable seeds in containers to decorate your home. Many people practice indoor vegetable gardening in the wintertime for different reasons.

Whether you’re looking to save some money or you simply don’t have the space for a garden, growing edibles indoors is possible with pepper seeds, strawberries, citrus, artichokes, tomatoes, garlic and herbs.

If all you grow are herbs, then that in itself is great because herbs don’t take a lot of time commitment, they’re easy to grow and will save you a lot of money.

The best containers for an edible garden

Containers can actually determine whether food will grow successfully or not and are one of the most important aspects to consider when planning an edible garden, especially when growing indoors.

You will need to consider the space you have available to know how many containers you can fit. Remember than an edible garden can be the smallest container you find as long as it contains a plant.

The various types of containers for growing edibles include hanging baskets, raised beds and container gardens that people use both indoors and outdoors.

The advantage with container gardening is that it can save a lot of space. But if you have enough space, then you could use old wheelbarrows, old car tires and large pots that can also serve decorative purposes.

The right soil for growing edibles

The secret to yielding lots and lots of edibles isn’t just sun. It isn’t just water either. You also need soil and the best one for growing high-yield can cost a few bucks.

For an edible container garden, you should use potting soil with a suitable ratio of ingredients. For example, test the bag of soil for clumps. When you squeeze the bag, there should be no crumbling inside of the soil.

Never opt for the cheapest soil because chances are you won’t get much from it and if it’s poor in organic matter, then it will yield poor crop.

If you decide to prepare the soil yourself, have it tested with a specialty service if available. The test should be able to reveal if something is lacking.

Usually the ideal soil would be free draining and have pH neutral to slightly acidic. You can test this yourself.

To determine the pH, you’ll need a pH kit which you can find at hardware stores.
