With the last months of the year having some of the greatest discounts due to sale events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many of us will tend to think that the beginning of a new year is less generous when it comes to discounts. Retailers big and small have shown the opposite, and January brings noteworthy deals on select product categories. Whether you have gift cards you want to use or a wish list waiting for you, here is more on the best things to buy in January.

Christmas decorations
Some of the greatest discounts you’ll get in January apply to Christmas decorations, given that many retailers want to clear out their stock. What’s left from December gets significantly discounted in January. Now is the best time to get Christmas trees and ornaments, as well as various Christmas-themed items for the home, as they can get discounted by up to 75%.
Even if you don’t use them until next Christmas, it’s still worth getting such items. Plus, if you don’t mind using a Santa Claus or winter-themed mug in other months, you will get to benefit from some of the newly-acquired items immediately after purchasing them.
Linens and bedding
January has become largely associated with the White Sales event that brings significant price cuts on bedding and linens; therefore, now is a great time to renew your linen collection or, why not, get some new duvets, sheets, bedspreads, towels, and other such items for your dear ones.
Retailers that offer such products include Macy’s, JCPenney, and Kohl’s, to name a few, and, based on what we’ve seen in the last few years, you’ll get price drops by up to 70% on bedding basics.
TVs
We might be inclined to think that the greatest discounts on electronics are offered during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas sale events, but that’s not the case for select such items. TVs and soundbars are among the best things to buy in January since they often get discounted during this time of the year.
It seems that there’s a link between the Super Bowl and these price cuts as shoppers are more interested in purchasing a new TV for the big game, and retailers are interested in clearing out their stocks of older or just slightly older models. Amazon, Best Buy, and Target are just some of the retailers that offer discounts on TVs in January, especially toward the end of it.
Winter apparel
We’ve been used to see great discounts on clothing toward the end of a season. For example, in August, prices drop significantly on summer clothing since fall is just around the corner. The same happens in January, considering that the warm season is closer and many retailers start focusing on their spring collection.
If you didn’t get the chance to renew your fashion collection for the cold season, now is the time to check the offer of major apparel retailers for discounts of up to 60% or so on a variety of clothing.
Fitness equipment
One common resolution we make when getting ready for a new year is losing weight or simply working out more. If that’s your case or you’ve already turned sports activities into a priority and your equipment could use a refresh, January’s offers are worth seizing as they usually include notable price drops on such items.
Discounts typically apply to fitness equipment and gear, including treadmills and elliptical, as well as to gym memberships.
Toys
Even if toys are part of the most sought-after products in December, and for a good reason, given the holidays, what’s left of them once Christmas is over typically goes on sale. If you have little ones who will be asking for new toys soon, it’s worth seizing January’s generosity to get new such items.
Walmart and Target hold semi-annual toy clearance events that include discounts of up to 70% on toys. Seasonal toys get discounted even more and some of them are paired with price cuts of up to 90%, which is truly a steal.
Furniture
A few patterns have contoured in the last few years, and based on them, the end of January and beginning of February mark the release of new furniture designs. That’s why January usually brings discounts on furniture and various home items, such as floors and carpets.

The items that are included in January’s sale events are fall and winter products, though, but if you find something you could use throughout the year, it is definitely worth refreshing the way your place looks as you won’t pay the full price.
