Americans Far More Willing Than Canadians to Pay More for Domestic Products

Consumers in Canada and the United States appear to have very different attitudes when it comes to paying a premium for domestically made products, according to two recent online surveys.

In the U.S. survey, “The Value of ‘Made in the USA’: Would You Pay More for U.S.-Made Products?”, a total of 1,537 votes were recorded.

An overwhelming 1,144 respondents (74.4%) said Yes, while just 393 (25.6%) said No. A 29-Percentage-Point Gap

The difference between the two countries is striking. While 45.3% of Canadians said they would pay more for domestic products, that figure rises to 74.4% among American respondents — a gap of approximately 29 percentage points.

The picture is considerably different north of the border.

In Canada, respondents were asked: “Would you be willing to pay more for Canadian products?”

Of the 2,596 votes collected, 1,420 respondents (54.7%) said No, while 1,176 (45.3%) said Yes.

The result suggests that although a large share of Canadians are willing to spend more to support Canadian products, price remains a deciding factor for the majority, while in the USA the “Made in the USA” label carries particularly strong value with American consumers, at least when shoppers are asked whether they would accept a higher price.

Canadian consumers appear more divided. Support for buying Canadian remains significant, but a majority of respondents are unwilling to pay extra to do so.

These surveys do not necessarily show what consumers will actually purchase at the checkout, but they offer an interesting snapshot of how shoppers in the two countries perceive the value of products made at home.
