Tips for Grocery Shopping at Kroger

With almost 2,800 stores across 35 states, the Kroger Company family is one of the largest supermarket chains in the country. The retailer has over a dozen subsidiaries, so if you’re not familiar with Kroger, you may be familiar with one of its many subdivisions, such as Ralphs in California, Dillons in Kansas, Fry’s in Arizona, King Soopers, or Food 4 Less, to name a few.

Despite the many names used for the retailer’s subsidiaries, there are a few shopping hacks that can help you save the same way at most of Kroger’s stores. Here are a few tips to help you save money and time next time you buy at Kroger.

Rewards Program

Creating an account with your local Kroger store and signing up for a Kroger Plus Card will help you save every time you shop at this retailer. You will thus get deals directly in your email inbox so that you can save next time you shop. Moreover, this makes it possible for you to add the coupons of interest from weekly ads directly to your Kroger card. Once added, these coupons will be applied during checkout.

You can register online, in-store, or in Kroger’s app. Even if you don’t register online, you still can use this card to benefit from discounts on a variety of products on sale.

Weekly Ad

Another simple way to save when shopping from this grocery retailer or one of its subsidiaries is to check the Kroger weekly ad before you shop. Like other retailers, Kroger and many of its subdivisions offer weekly specials that can help you save on a variety of items.

The flyer typically features different types of deals, such as “buy one, get one free,” discounts of up to 30% on select items, two items for $5, and so on. Therefore, make sure you check the weekly specials before you hit the order button or shop in-store.

Yellow and Red Tag Specials

Besides the offers included in the weekly flyer, you can also save on selected merchandise thanks to the so-called yellow and red tag specials. If you shop online, yellow tag products are included in the sale section. Depending on the Kroger store or subdivision you choose for your shopping, you can also find red ‘WooHoo’ tags products.

These special prices usually apply to seasonal goods or products reaching their “best by” or expiration dates. They are typically located near the stock-room door, in end caps, or in the middle of aisles. Dairy and produce with red or yellow tags are located where the non-discounted products are.

Fuel Points Program

At Kroger, you get to save not only when stocking up on groceries but also when filling up your gas tank. Thanks to the store’s Fuel Points Program, you get to one fuel point for every dollar you spend at Kroger. Gift cards will earn you 2x fuel points, so the more you shop at this retailer, the more fuel points you collect.

Plus, you can earn fuel points even at Fred Meyer Jewelers, Kroger’s Pharmacy, and when you place an order online at this retailer. According to Kroger’s official website, you can earn 50 fuel points on qualifying prescriptions.

To see how many fuel points you’ve accumulated, simply sign in to your account or check the bottom of the receipt. When you have 100 fuel points, you can use them to save $0.10 per gallon of fuel for one fill-up at one of Kroger’s fuel centers. The more points you have, the more you save.

Mega Sales

If you prefer to buy in bulk, seizing Kroger’s Mega Sales events will help you save even further. Such events feature lower prices on select items when those products are purchased in a certain number. For example, if you buy 4 products in a certain category, you get to save $4, or if you buy 10 select items, you save $10, and so on.

Such events are held several times a year, and the products included are typically paired with a blue label. Make sure to check the weekly ad or Kroger’s website to see if there’s any such event running at the moment.

Digital Coupons and Shipping Options

Kroger will also help you save even further thanks to its exclusive online deals and Kroger digital coupons. Make sure you check the Kroger website for such offers before your next in-store or online shopping session. What’s also great is that the store offers exclusive coupons on products when you’re using their pickup or delivery service.
