What is a Sandwich or a Sub?

A sandwich is a food item were you put some fillings like meat, cheese, vegetables or spreads between two slices of bread. A sub which is a short name for submarine sandwich, is also a sandwich, but one that uses a long, baguette-style roll, that is sliced lengthwise and filled with various ingredients like deli meats, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and more.

The sandwich, as we know it today, is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English nobleman. According to legend, Montagu was an avid gambler who didn’t want to leave the card table to eat. In 1762, he requested his servants to bring him meat placed between two slices of bread, in order to eat with one hand while continuing his game. His fellow gamblers soon began ordering “the same food as Sandwich,” and thus, the sandwich was born.

Worth knowing is that the concept of bread-enclosed food existed long before Montagu’s time. In the 1st century BCE, Jewish sage Hillel the Elder is said to have wrapped paschal lamb and bitter herbs in matzo, creating an early form of a sandwich during Passover. In the Middle Ages, thick slices of stale bread called trenchers were used as edible plates for meats and stews. Today, you can eat a sandwich or sub almost anywhere, with different ingredients, and at any time of day.

The submarine sandwich, also called a sub, hoagie, hero, grinder, or torpedo, is a long, bread-filled sandwich with meats, cheeses, vegetables, and condiments. Its origins are not exactly known, but it is believed to have been created by Italian-American immigrants in the early 20th century in the United States.

The name “submarine sandwich” is thought to have originated when one Italian immigrant in New Jersey started selling long Italian sandwiches filled with cold cuts, cheese, and vegetables in his grocery store.

You can easily make one at home from some leftovers, or you can go out and order one from your local fast food restaurant or grocery store, freshly made with two slices of bread and something in between.
