Why you spend less at the checkout when buying at ALDI

ALDI US is one of the cheapest supermarkets out there. A German-owned grocery chain, Aldi is present in 32 states and has grown in America from owning 1,140 stores in 2011 to 1,600 in 2015. By 2018, the supermarket plans to expand further to roughly 2,000 stores.

By now, you probably don’t need anyone to tell you that shopping at ALDI saves money, but if you want to know why ALDI is so inexpensive read on.

  • ALDI Minimizes Staff

The supermarket will only employ an average of 7-9 employees for each store, thus reducing the number of payments. By not having many employees to pay, ALDI is not only able to keep costs down and pass on savings to customers, but also pay its employees good hourly wages.

  • ALDI Sells Mostly Their Private Label Brand

Because ALDI sells only a handful of name brands, it offers shoppers insanely low prices that eventually add up to a whole bunch of savings. For example, a basket of groceries from ALDI costs even $21 less than if you shopped at competitors, according to Cheapism.com. This means you’re saving $75 to $100 a month if you shop at ALDI.

  • ALDI operates smaller stores than competitors

Perusing supermarket aisles is never exhausting at ALDI as is when shopping at some of the other grocery chains with more brand choice. You’ve already noticed that the supermarket stores aren’t as big, but about the same size of a neighborhood drugstore chain. For Aldi, this means paying either lower rent or less real estate, which translates into cutting back on costs and more customer savings.

  • ALDI asks customers to bring their own bags

Maybe you’re not receiving free bags when shopping at ALDI. But when you downsize each grocery shopping with a whopping $10, do you really care?

The bring-your-own-bag strategy helps the supermarket reduce supplementary costs. They also don’t employ anyone to round up carts because they don’t have to. ALDI US asks customers to rent a cart for a quarter, which they get back when returning it to the parking lot.

Also, ALDI doesn’t list any phone numbers, thus also reducing costs by not having to hire extra staff to answer the phone. It’s all part of an efficient strategy to offer more savings to customers.

  • How you can save even more with ALDI

Keep an eye out every Wednesday for ALDI US weekly ad & specials. You can either flip through the weekly ad on their website or choose to have it emailed to you every week. Another option is to use their mobile app, which is also helpful if you want to find stores or create shopping lists.

If you’re into online browsing, then you may also want to check out ALDI’s Special Buys section on their website where the supermarket enlists various themed items on special prices. They also have Fresh Meat Special Buys on Wednesdays, advertised both online and in store.

ALDI’s best deals are usually meats and produce, either frozen or fresh, so this is also what you should be looking for when shopping here. The store also has seasonal markdowns but you have to be quick to grab a bargain as these items usually sell very fast.

Because the majority of products at ALDI US are house brand items, the supermarket does not take manufacturer’s coupons. However, ALDI may issue some coupons of their own from time to time, mostly with special events such as grand store openings.
